BB, I know nothing, really, about this matter.

What appears to be true to me is that no single country can act without the complicity of the other countries around it.

In the same way that Italy attacked Ethiopia, exactly as Selassie says, the other countries REFUSED TO SELL ARMS to Ethiopia and furthermore ALLOWED THE ATTACKS TO OCCUR.

Dictator has nothing to do with the behavior of the ruler- honestly- it is a misnomer to say so-Dictator, like president or PM, is a set of rules that a leader operates under.

IE, a PM is under the jurisdiction of a parliament.
How that PM behaves may be good, bad, or indifferent, but so-being isn't directly required to be a PM.

Same with dictator.

It is a name of a leader that has specific rules.

A dictator has more autonomy, but whether he is good, bad, or indifferent is not a requisite of whether or not he is a dictator...or a president...or a pm...or a king...or an emperor. These are all descriptions of limitations of power, constitutional or otherwise, NOT descriptions of the QUALITY of the power.

Even the office of Tyrant originally described HOW a person gained power, not the quality or use of the power they gained.
It was considered a valid political position long before democracy- seldom attempted never attained- was even contemplated.

In fact, the Pisistratid tyranny was a highlight in the development of Athens.
http://nostalgia.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pesistratus
I know it's wikipedia, but the research is easy. He was beloved of Athens, lowered taxes, increased wealth...TYRANT refers to a FORM of government...NOT a morality...Theucidides...must be read when studying govs.

"Dictator" is a title, refers to a constitutional power, is NOT an insult.

BLESS UP!!!!!

I am sliding in reason at this late hour...if Selassie were vile he'd have illegally attained arms and fought against protocol...he did not.

Ethiopia survived.

BLESS UP!!!!!!

So when the Italians were carpet-bombing Ethiopia with toxic gasses that was just and reasonable, since the Italians obviously thought they had the right?

Moral relativism is the road to Hell.

wilko, I'm just curious.  Do people in the UK generally have bad things to say about H.I.M.?  A colored version of the truth?  When I speak about H.I.M. here in the US, no one has heard of him.  It is certainly not taught in history books here.  I believe Bablyon wants Selassie history to just go away and fade into history.

Bless

Not many people have heard of H.I.M in the uk who i know, we never learnt about H.I.M in schools either

Same in my town of springfield ma. InI didnt learn a thing about H. I. M wile in school. and none knows of His ways or teachings in my town, well out of who ive met. I agree with bretherin natty threads. I also believe the Babylon system will always lye on H. I. M. ,and try to hide his magnificent teachings. Wether rasta or not everyone should do some research on our great god. His teachings can better any man one way or another if u ask me. And on the dictator matter,u should listen to your heart, forget what your friends say                                          Jah Bless

Was HIM a dictator? Yes, he was. Dictating equal rights and justice and unity as the human race. That's why Bob was singing "give us the teachings of His majesty, we don't want no devil philosophy".

His Imperial Majesty's ascension was dynastic.  He can never be considered a dictator.  Not only that, he was not an absolutist, as demonstrated by his reforming of the government into a constitutional monarchy, in line with his contemporary peers in ancient high cultural lineage (Japan) built on the model of Melchizedek.  HIM represented nobility in our human race, unlike low brow fascists & tyrants.  Not only that, he's the King of *kings*, a dictator does not function in a way that lays out a path for the people to royal elevation, nor do dictators tolerate and encourage the mutual friendship between kings as does a world citizen from high culture, which is the solomonid imperial vibe.

100% legit.  Contrast it with just about everyone else who wields power among the nations: maintaining power at gunpoint.
It is true that he elucidated human rights and unity, but he didn't force it on others because he knew justice and unity is not achievable without synergy with the people.

if it seems questionable to you it probably not be true, history is not a rehashing of facts; its people's perspectives and opinions. maybe to some misguided people he was a dictator just like some view Hitler as a hero, to find the real truth one must compare and contrast different accounts of HIM life. the objective shouldn't be to prove others wrong but to make sure you are right

Hallo!

I'm not a Rasta but I'm interested in this question.  I think there are just two persons mixed up: HS the "real person" which died in the 70's and the "Idea" of HS.  There are just some historical facts, even though some might be biased.  I don't believe that all Ethiopian people were treated equal during his regency. . .  but i think he tried to develop the country.  For me there are two main problems about the so called historical facts about HS: 1.  Many rulers who were dethroned by their political "enemies" haven't been as bad as the new ruler or group of rulers wanted to make the people believe.  2.  Other forces in and outside of Africa might had their benefits of weakening HS position.  Just look what the western wold has done to Arabic countries now (e. g.  Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran).

A nice book to read is "The Emperor: Downfall of an Autocrat" by Ryszard Kapuściński.  I don't believe that it illustrates completely who HS was, but at least one aspect of him and how he ruled the country.

I'm sorry for my bad english!

Many of the answers to our questions could probably be found in his autobiography "My Life and Ethiopia's Progress".

I've been meaning to read it myself, and hope to soon.

Maybe someone here will beat me to it.

A lot of confusion has been sown in the world about good men and even about God himself.

That's one of the tricky things, is untangling the falsehoods, and finding the truth, but if you seek the truth with a sincere heart, you will find it.

Peace and Love.

Here is some insight from an American who was chosen to serve Jah Ras Tafari:

http://newsblog.projo.com/2010/12/donald-paradis-86-dies-wrote-s.html

Donald Paradis, 86; speechwriter for Ethiopian emperor
2:06 PM Mon, Dec 06, 2010 | Permalink
Thomas J. Morgan    Email

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island native Donald E. Paradis, 86, who served as chief adviser to the government of Ethiopia for 11 years beginning in 1957, and who wrote speeches for the late Emperor Haile Selassie, died Nov. 28 in Sibley Memorial Hospital, in Washington, D.C.

As speechwriter for the emperor, and also for the prime minister and foreign minister, he drafted Haile Selassie's addresses to the United Nations, and accompanied him on state visits, including one to the United States in 1963 to address the UN General Assembly and to meet with President John F. Kennedy.

Paradis described the emperor in a 2008 speech as "the quintessential benevolent dictator." He said that Haile Selassie, given his own way, would have modernized his nation at a much quicker pace, but was "a captive of the system," needing the support of rich landowners who felt threatened by the modern world.

"He stood with one foot in the feudal past and the other in the 20th Century," Paradis said.

The emperor was eventually overthrown in a coup.

Paradis was born in West Warwick and grew up there, graduating from West Warwick Senior High School in 1940. A varsity player, he received an offer of a football scholarship from Boston College, but instead accepted a full academic scholarship at Wesleyan University, from which he graduated in 1943 with honors.

He was a cum-laude graduate of the Harvard Law School in 1950, and served as president of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau from 1949 to 1950.

Paradis was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1944, one of the so-called "90-day wonders" due to the length of their training, and spent two years serving on mine-layers and minesweepers.

From 1950 to 1952 he was assistant general counsel for the European headquarters of the Marshall Plan, then for the next three years was deputy U.S. observer for the State Department to the European Coal and Steel Community, a framework that evolved into the European Union.

Paradis joined a Wall Street law firm from 1953 to 1957, specializing in securities underwriting and petroleum negotiations in Central and South America.

He became chief adviser to the Ethiopian government, serving from 1957 to 1968. His duties included legal, banking, agricultural, economic, political and commercial affairs. According to a biographical paper, he promoted modernization of the country, including steps to a constitutional monarchy with parliament and cabinet. He also worked to shape the country's foreign policies.

Paradis helped create the Organization of African Unity, drafting that body's charter. He was a member of delegations that negotiated with the United Nations and other organizations on matters such as rail and air transportation.

Paradis was president of the Chappaqua Oil Corp., and negotiated oil contracts in Libya until Col. Moammar Gadhafi led a revolution and confiscated the corporation's assets.

Paradis was the husband of the late Elizabeth [Reid] Paradis. He had most recently lived at the Collington Retirement Community, in Mitchellville, Maryland.

He is survived by a companion, Teresa "Tita" DeGavre, two children and two grandchildren.

He set a great example for us to use our gifts and talents to serve the Most High.

So little faith and knowledge among I and I still I see.

One of the most important things I and I must do in I and I Livity is seek to cut through the lies and propaganda about His Majesty Selassie I. I and I read his speeches and works like the His autobiography and I and I see the truth. Of course Selassie I dictate certain things. His Majesty is a King and Emperor through the lineage of Solomon. But Iman implore those here who doubt His Majesty to seek more knowledge on the matter. Read His Majesty's speeches and words and reliable accounts of His Majesty and the I's will see truth. Read what the enemies of Selassie I write and Iman shouldn't need to tell the I's what will be found there.

I and I cannot trod Rastafari without knowledge. Selassie I and Marcus teach I and I that.

http://jah-rastafari.com/jah-index.asp?id=7467879950586

Here the Idren can find plenty of reading. His Majesty's autobiography and speeches, the Kebre Negast and selected writings of Marcus Garvey along with the scriptures.

Blessed love.

So much propaganda against His Majesty. First they say HIM died, and didn't show us his grave, and now they say He was an evil dictator? Utter nonsense. I and I know His Majesty is the Alpha and Omega. People talk about God, and they say things against God in todays society, but it's the same thing they are doing to His Majesty. Overstand?
