Hey,
Im new to the forum but not Rastafari.   I want to start growing some locks but I want them naturally NOT a salon lock.   How long would it take to dread my hair this way ?

when growing natural dreads you cant really say how long it will take because every ones hair dreads at a different pace. seen?

and u have straight hair, would definintely advise backcombing and wax.

Why would you want to force something? Trying to be something u r not. It make no sense. Just my opinion.

All hair will dread, it's just a matter of time.

I best friend is Caucasian with straight hair and he has half a head of dreads after around a year brother ridgey, patience is key. I have thick wavy hair and it took I hair less than a year to fully dread.

dreads take a lot off time and love if i wants thick and beatiful locks then i think a natural aprotch is need beacause all hair will knot up in to natty locks but if i doesnt want to wait atleast a year tthen backcombing will help but DONT USE WAX !!!! keep it natural just keep ya har clean and keep um clean

And always remember - dreadlocks is not obligatory. It is a choice, for the "extra" militant believers in the Most High.
It's not a look. Simple. That is why Iman cover I dread.

1. Wash hair regularly (using whichever soap/shampoo/conditioners you prefer) as you would normally do. Remember that thicker dreadlocks are like sponges and require more rinsing, drying time etc.
2. Dry as normal .... (I prefer to use a towel to dry my locks but I am sure the choice is yours) except ....
3. Do not brush
4. Do not comb
5. Do not cut
6. Split (tear) apart thicker dreadlocks should ya feel so inclined
7. If you get to step 7. and have perfectly straight untangled hair go to step 1. Repeat for indefinite amount of time.
If you get to step 7. and have a birds nest at the back of your head but the rest of your hair does not seem to be very knotted I would suggest buying a hat/headscarf and wearing it at all times to avoid strange looks and silly comments although the hat/headscarf itself may prompt exactly the same reaction from people so it is really a matter of whatever makes you feel comfortable! Then go to step 7a. Repeat for indefinite amount of time.
If you get to step 7. and have short, tiny dreadlocks and/or long, thick dread locks or any amount of tangled hair that is long and clearly knotted go to step 8.
7a. Some of your hair is knotted maybe some is not .... there is this birds nest at the back of my head (see step 6.) but the rest does not seem to be very tangled (add indefinite amount of time and go to step 1.). Repeat as necessary.
8. I have short, tiny dreadlocks and/or long, thick dread locks or any amount of tangled hair that is long/short and clearly knotted - Go to step 1. Repeat for lifetime.

9. *quick guide* Wash hair as required. Let hair grow. Repeat for lifetime. (add hat/headscarf as and when required)

I have risen 3 months ago and spoke to many elders with regards to this matter.  Everytime InI received a similar answer.  In I should not chase dreadlocks but chase the pursuit of knowledge.  This means instead of spending time on growing dreads rather spend time gaining knowledge about H. I. M and the history about the movement.  Also read your bible and get to know everything about Hallie Sallasie I.  Your dreads will grow by the mercy of Hallie Sallasie I.  So seek knowledge not dreadlocks.

Ras Troy, that is is spot on man, just leave them and Jah will take care of them. Blatantly knowledge is far more important than dreadlocks and more people should see this.

I'm black and I started my locks with a loctician.  She's not RastafarI.  She has a love for hair and how the dreads are symbols of many things to many different people.  I intend to cultivate my dreads on my own by the wash and shake method. . . i work in an office and needed them to begin nicely with a shape.  Now they on dey way.
