I was asked recently what rastas believed in, and it has made I think about how best to explain to someone who has no knowledge of rasta.

A definition that I came up with is:

"Rastas believe in Jah, and use teachings of Haile Selassie as a model of how to live in oneness with Jah."

(I do not like the word 'God' because it makes I think of the connotations attached by Babylon.)

I look forward to hearing other definitions of InI belief.

I think it varies greatly.  There is also a difference between 'know' and 'believe'.

The perception of Jah in Rastafari should not be restricted by culture or books (even if divine-inspired) as in 'religion' i.e. 'Jah, God and Allah are separate beings' and for that reason the phrase 'believe in' should be ommitted, and replaced with 'know'.  It is a shame the English language is so limited in explaining Iritual Icepts, and for that reason I have found that study of Chinese Iritual tradition gives us more appropriate words.  I think the word Tao has a huge correlation with RasTafarI but I am at a loss to explain it in English.

You should also include Afrikan liberation in your definition.
