I am familiar with Dub as being you know, Dub, more reggae...artist I can think of off the top of my head are Scientist, and stuff.  However I am aware of a new genre called Dubstep, which is like electro, bass heavy, techno and modern like.

Does dubstep originate from dub? (Reggae dub?) Or is it just two completely different music types, with similar names.

Thanks,

Jah Bless

Dub is the foundation of all those new music things. If it runs through a soundsystem then Dub is the foundation. In the case of dubstep, it is just the result of the UK underground music scene blending together. It's the heavy bass sound from the big UK dub rigs mixed in with some drum and bass, grime and some dance things thrown in for good measure.
Personally I can't stand the sound, but it is what it is.

Blessed love
