Good Jazz
« on: August 09, 2005, 04:26:16 AM »

This is a message I attempted to send to one user...but will post it to one and all so all knowledge can be spread....

Just read one of your posts...it seems your knowledgeable on jazz. This is a genre I've attempted to get into but have had trouble finding good artists in regards too.

So that you're aware of my preferences - I don't so much enjoy the early Miles Davis stuff like "Diggin'" but absolutely love the funky stuff of Herbie Hancocks golden period - like the "Head Hunters" album. In other words, I enjoy the style as long as there's a strong groove to move it along, seen?

Any reccomendations?

Bitches Brew by Miles Davis totally different than his straightforward stuff.Check out Antibalas, they are African Funk/Jazz and Fela Kuti who is the king of African funk.

Are you sure you don't like "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis?

I am into the small 3-5 piece jazz bands that don't have a lot of effects on their instruments so this may not fit into the more funk styles that came in the late 60s.  But this is a must have album.  Something to study -- it was the first of its kind to do an indepth review of a certain "mode" (Dorian) of music. (play along with your guitar for hours!!!)

Plus, the musicians on this cd are out of this world.  I am a fan of everyone, but the piano player, Bill Evans, is something to behold. (get "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" if interested -- my favorite bass player Scott LaFaro tragically died not long after these sessions--he would have been one of the greatest if he had lived).

One Love!

Enjoy Positive V!

Enjoy you

Most of Hancock's stuff is pretty sweet, including Mwandishi, but for old school Coltrane's Quartet has gotta be my favourite - they released some outstanding records together.

There's plenty more where these came from, so if you want more, then holla.

Peace

I do hope this comment doesn't insinuate that you've stuck a label on me & filed me?

Greetings and peace.

I very much enjoy some good jazz music but am ignorant as to which groups are really good (other than the obvious Miles Davis and such). I appreciate all of the suggestions and will look into them soon.
