Racist killers given long jail terms
01/12/2005 18:30

LONDON (Reuters) - A 17-year-old youth and his 20-year-old cousin were given long jail sentences on Thursday for the racist murder of Anthony Walker, a black student bludgeoned to death with an ice axe.

The judge said Michael Barton, 17, younger brother of Manchester City soccer player Joey Barton, must serve 17 years and 8 months in jail, for killing the 18-year-old college student in an unprovoked attack in July.

His cousin, Paul Taylor, who admitted murdering the devout Christian in a park in Huyton, near Liverpool, before the trial was due to start in Liverpool last month, was jailed for at least 23 years and 8 months.

"This was a racist attack of a type poisonous to any civilised society," the BBC quoted judge Justice Leveson as saying. "There is no difference between people of different races, each trying to live out their lives in peace.

"In spite of your youth, deterrent sentences are vital," he told Taylor and Barton, who had denied murder but was found guilty by a jury on Wednesday.

Walkerís mother Gee, who said she would forgive her sonís killers, was not totally satisfied with the sentences.

Asked if it was long enough she told reporters: "Not really, but itís within the framework of the justice system so I am pleased with it, yes ... We just have to accept it.

"NO SENTENCE WILL BRING MY SON BACK"

"I hope and pray that they take this time to reflect on what theyíve done. No sentence, no matter how long, will bring my son back."

Taylorís lawyer told the court before he was sentenced that he was sorry for what he had done.

"Surely, his mum must have instilled some goodness in him for him to accept heís done something wrong, and I admire him for that," Gee Walker said.

Walker, a keen sports fan, was escorting his white girlfriend Louise Thompson, 17, to a bus stop when he was set upon by a group of youths.

The attack came just minutes after he had been taunted with racist abuse.

Both Taylor and Barton fled the country following the attack but later returned to Liverpool following a televised appeal from Bartonís footballer brother.

Walkerís killing shocked the local community and attracted massive media attention, evoking memories of the 1993 high-profile racist killing of Stephen Lawrence in southeast London.

Both Lawrence and Walker were attacked by thugs as they waited at bus stops and both were strong students with high aspirations. Walker wanted to be a lawyer, Lawrence an architect.

Greetings and peace.

It is not justice. If he took someone else's life he should not be given the priviledge to live on of his own. He should be locked up indefinitely and he should be put to work in hard labor.

greetins all,
I was completely appauled by the whole thing. Somany years after coming tolive in the UK black and asian people have to suffer racism of all sorts. For some it leads to their death. In the UK they will serve the required sentences they have been given but they wil only be let out on licence. That means if they commit another crime they willbe straight back in jail again. This does not make it right but strictly speaking they are not free when they come out again. My hear tis so sad for the whole family. I watched a programmem on this crime last night and the really sad thing is that the 2 boys who murdered him went to the same school and they grew up together with anthony. they knew who he was. That was appaulling.
